Storm Runners by Roland Smith

Storm Runners by Roland Smith is the first book in the Storm Runners series that I recommend for reluctant readers and enthusiastic readers alike starting in 4th grade and up. I listened to the audiobook as read by one of my favorite narrators, Ramon De Ocampo. The book tells the story of 12 year old Chase and his father, who chases storms in order to help rebuild after the damage is done. Book 1 features Emily, a hurricane in Florida, that Chase and his dad  straight into. The two are separate when Emily hits, and Chase finds himself in a precarious situation where he must take care of himself and other students. The story feels like realistic fiction merged with adventure/survival fiction, so it can be recommended to many kids.

There’s a special treat at the end of Disc 4. Don’t take it out right at the end of the book! The author Roland Smith comes on and talks about his career working with animals, and tells about his first experience with a strong, serious storm. I love it when there are special features like an author experience that I wasn’t expecting.
