You Will Be My Friend

In You Will Be My Friend, by Peter Brown, Lucille Bear is going to make a new friend…TODAY!!!!! Lucy discovers that making a new friend is much more difficult than she thought it would be. All she wanted to do was to do cartwheels, have picnics, climb trees, go swimming, and have a dance party! But alas, making a friend just isn’t working out for Lucy. And telling individuals that they WILL be her friend isn’t very friendly. So many kids (and adults) can relate to Lucy–her desire to be liked, to have a friend to have fun with, and the feeling of rejection that can follow. It’s an excellent title for discussion, page by page, of what’s happening. The charming illustrations are colorful, with zero white space on any of the pages. I have a favorite illustration involving Lucy and an egg sitting in a nest. I recommend this book for kids to read on their own, but also definitely for families to read and enjoy together.
