Alexander Hamilton: the Outsider by Jean Fritz

I’ll admit it. Like much of the United States, until the Hamilton musical came out, I knew that Hamilton was on the $10 bill, was killed in a duel with Aaron Burr, and had something to do with the American Revolution. I’m sad to say that I knew little more than that. It’s been fun to learn more!

This short audiobook by Jean Fritz was only about 2 hours long, yet packed in lots of facts about Alexander Hamilton. The audiobook is based on the nonfiction book by Fritz reprinted in 2012. The book is short and easier to digest than many of the adult biographies about Hamilton.

The book covers his beginnings and his history with George Washington during the War. How he was instrumental during the writing of the Constitution. How he became the First Secretary of the Treasury. And, the duel where he and Burr fought and he lost.

While short, the book is effective. The narration in the audio kept my attention and I didn’t stray from the text. It was a worthwhile addition to my repertoire of audiobooks listened to.
