12 year old Clara lives in 1906 San Francisco. After the infamous San Francisco earthquakes occur, Clara finds an infant on the steps of her family’s home. Someone has left the child behind! Clara is determined to find the true home for Baby H (so named due to the one clue left behind with him), and in so doing finds herself in great danger.

I was impressed with how well the author wove the historical facts of living through this natural disaster with a fictional story of a possible kidnapping. The audio is 4 hours long, and the story is fraught with suspense. It is most definitely one of the better American Girl History Mysteries.

Despite the “American Girl” label, the book is appropriate for any gender, and is excellent for family reading.
