National Waffle Week is celebrated the first full week of September. Waffle comes from the Middle Dutch word wafele, dating back to the 13th Century! This is when flat cakes began to have the distinctive waffle stamping placed. They are delicious and multifaceted.
The World Fair introduced waffle cones for ice cream. Eggo frozen waffles showed up in 1953, but they were called “Froffles”, a mix of Frozen and Waffles. In 1955 they got the permanent name Eggo. In 1964, Belgian Waffle irons became popular in the United States.
Waffle House, the restaurant chain, started National Waffle Week in 2001 to celebrate the tasty treat. How can you celebrate National Waffle Week? Look for a sale on waffles at your favorite restaurant! Try something new–a new mix-in, a different syrup. The possibilities are endless. Share your favorites and social media, and encourage your friends to do the same!
